Dr. Athanasios Tzaras joined Excel Pain and Spine in September 2023. He is double board-certified in Interventional Pain Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). Dr. Tzaras’ interest in pain medicine stems from his passion in treating his patients entirely, focusing on ways to improve his patient’s quality of life and functional independence, allowing them to live their life to their fullest potential.

Dr. Tzaras was born and raised in New York. Prior to entering the field of medicine, Dr. Tzaras honed his skills as an electrician in New York City. This hands-on experience instilled a strong work ethic and problem-solving aptitude that continues to define his approach to patient care. A graduate of the University of South Florida, Dr. Tzaras earned his bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, setting the stage for his subsequent medical pursuits. He embarked on a transformative path by attending the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in Sint Maarten, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. This decision was fueled by his unwavering dedication to making a meaningful impact on patients’ lives.

During his medical education, Dr. Tzaras demonstrated exceptional commitment and excellence, culminating in his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Throughout this journey, he was recognized as the Academic Chief Resident, an honor reflective of his leadership skills and dedication to advancing medical education. Dr. Tzaras was also awarded the title of Intern of the Year and received the Resident Educator Award during his residency. These accolades underscore his commitment to not only his own growth but also to imparting knowledge to his peers and future physicians.

Driven by a passion to alleviate patients' suffering, Dr. Tzaras pursued an ACGME accredited Pain Medicine fellowship at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. This specialized training equipped him with the expertise to employ innovative interventional techniques, providing effective pain management solutions to those in need. His dedication to improving patients' quality of life through precise and compassionate care remains at the forefront of his practice. Connecting with patients is an integral part of Dr. Tzaras’ practice. He believes that each patient’s story is unique, and understanding their pain experience on both a medical and emotional level is crucial.
