Dr. Matthew Vassaur joined Excel Pain and Spine in 2023 where he strives to provide the highest quality of patient care. Drawing from his background as a dual board certified physician in the fields of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) and Pain Medicine, he aims to offer a simple and pragmatic approach to pain management. Quite often the most effective solution is hiding in plain sight, which is the approach Dr. Vassaur employs when treating his patients.

Although he claims he’s a Texan, Dr. Vassaur was originally born in Arkansas and lived in Pennsylvania and North Carolina before finishing high school in Dallas, Texas. Subsequently he completed his undergraduate studies in Spanish language and English literature at Texas A&M University where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and US Army ROTC program. In 2007 he studied at the Universidad de Salamanca in Salamanca, Spain. During his semester abroad he lived with a Spanish host family, and developed proficiency in the Spanish language.

In 2008 he commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army, and from 2009 to 2010 he deployed to Kuwait/Iraq as a Transportation Company Platoon Leader in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Throughout his nearly five years of military service he was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado and filled a number of leadership positions, which ultimately resulted in him being promoted to Captain. During this time he also successfully completed the revered Pathfinder and Air Assault courses. Despite his success in the military, in 2012 he felt called to leave the US Army and pursue a career in medicine.

After departing active duty military service, Dr. Vassaur returned to Texas where he completed the necessary medical school pre-requisite courses before matriculating to Texas A&M University to earn his MD. During his fourth year of medical school he completed an away rotation at the University of South Florida (USF) in the PM&R department. He fell in love with musculoskeletal medicine and also the state of Florida. He subsequently matched into the PM&R program at USF where he would go on to also complete a fellowship in Pain Medicine. Following his fellowship experience, Dr. Vassaur went on to become certified in numerous minimally invasive surgical procedures in the field of Pain Medicine.

Nowadays when not at work, Dr. Vassaur prefers to spend his time with his wife and kids on their small homestead or at their local church. Dr. Vassaur is a man who is driven by principles, which is evident in the conscientious manner he approaches patient care.
