Peripheral Magnetic Stimulation (PMS)
EXCEL Pain and Spine is thrilled to announce that we are expanding our range of services to include Peripheral Magnetic Stimulation (PMS). At EXCEL, we are committed to providing comprehensive and innovative solutions for pain management.
Overview
Peripheral Magnetic Stimulation (PMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses pulsed electromagnetic energy to stimulate peripheral nerves and surrounding tissues. It may help manage pain and improve function in certain patients experiencing acute or chronic musculoskeletal or nerve-related pain.
At Excel Pain and Spine, PMS is performed in our office using a specialized Peripheral Nerve Stimulator machine. Unlike implantable peripheral nerve stimulation procedures, our PMS treatment does not require surgery, implanted wires, needles, or injections.
During treatment, a stimulation coil is positioned over or near the targeted area of pain. The machine delivers electromagnetic pulses according to the treatment settings selected by our clinical team. Treatment intensity is adjusted based on the patient's tolerance.
Our goal is to help reduce pain and support improved comfort and daily function. Results vary from patient to patient, and PMS may be used as part of an individualized pain management plan.
What conditions may be treated with PMS?
PMS may be considered for patients experiencing certain types of pain affecting the following areas:
Knee Pain: Chronic knee pain, osteoarthritis-related discomfort, and pain following surgery.
Shoulder Pain: Shoulder discomfort, tendinitis, and certain musculoskeletal conditions.
Ankle Pain: Chronic ankle pain, sprains, strains, and tendinitis.
Wrist and Hand Pain: Wrist pain, hand discomfort, and certain nerve-related conditions.
Elbow Pain: Tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, and tendinitis.
Foot Pain: Chronic foot pain, plantar fasciitis, and certain nerve-related conditions.
Other Areas of Pain: Additional treatment areas may be considered based on the patient's symptoms and the treating provider's evaluation.
Not every condition or patient is appropriate for PMS. Your provider will determine whether this treatment is suitable for your individual needs.
What are the potential benefits of PMS?
Depending on the patient's condition and response to treatment, potential benefits may include:
• Helping reduce pain and discomfort.
• Supporting improved mobility and daily activities.
• Helping patients participate more comfortably in rehabilitation or other recommended treatments.
• Supporting an individualized, non-invasive approach to pain management.
• Avoiding the need for an implanted stimulation device.
The degree and duration of pain relief vary. Results are not guaranteed.
How is PMS performed?
PMS treatment is performed in our office without surgery or injections.
Patient positioning: Our clinical team helps position you comfortably so the treatment area can be accessed.
Initial mapping: During the initial mapping visit, the clinical team identifies the appropriate target area for stimulation.
Coil placement: The stimulation coil is positioned over or near the targeted area of pain.
Treatment settings: The machine is programmed according to our clinic's treatment protocol. Stimulation intensity is adjusted based on your tolerance.
Treatment session: The machine delivers electromagnetic pulses during a treatment session that typically lasts approximately 13 minutes.
Tolerance assessment: Our team checks on your comfort and tolerance during treatment. Please let us know if you experience discomfort or any unusual symptoms.
Your provider and clinical team will determine the appropriate treatment plan for you.
Does PMS treatment hurt?
Treatment intensity is adjusted based on your tolerance. Please notify our clinical team if the stimulation becomes uncomfortable.
How long does a PMS treatment take?
The stimulation portion of a standard PMS session at our office is approximately 13 minutes. Additional time may be needed for positioning, initial mapping when applicable, reviewing treatment settings, and documenting the session. Your total appointment time may vary.
What are the risks and possible side effects?
- Temporary discomfort during stimulation.
- Temporary soreness or muscle fatigue in the treatment area.
- Localized sensitivity or other unexpected symptoms.
Pre-Procedure Information:
What should I tell my provider before treatment?
Please inform your provider and clinical team if you:
• Have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic medical device.
• Have any medical condition that may affect your eligibility for electromagnetic stimulation.
• Are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are trying to become pregnant.
• Have new symptoms, an active medical issue, or concerns about the treatment area.
• Have any questions about whether PMS is appropriate for you.
Your provider will determine whether treatment can be performed safely based on your medical history and the equipment's precautions.
Should I take my normal medications as scheduled?
Continue taking your prescribed medications as directed unless your treating provider gives you different instructions. Do not stop or change a medication solely because you are receiving PMS treatment.
What if I take a blood thinner or aspirin?
Because PMS is non-invasive and does not involve an injection or surgical incision, blood thinners generally do not require the same preparation used for invasive procedures. However, please inform your provider of all medications you take. Do not stop aspirin or any prescribed blood thinner unless the prescribing clinician instructs you to do so.
Do I need a driver?
A driver is not typically required for PMS alone. However, your individual circumstances, other procedures, medications, or medical conditions may affect whether you should drive. Follow any specific instructions from your clinical team.
Can I eat before treatment?
There is generally no fasting requirement for PMS alone. You may eat and drink normally unless your provider gives you different instructions for another procedure or medical reason.
Can I receive sedation or anesthesia?
PMS treatment at our office is non-invasive and does not ordinarily require sedation or anesthesia.
What if I am pregnant?
Please inform your provider if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or are trying to become pregnant. Your provider will determine whether PMS is appropriate based on your circumstances and the equipment's safety guidance.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows the treatment area to be accessed easily. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to adjust your clothing or change into a gown.
Post-Procedure Information
When can I drive after PMS treatment?
Most patients can resume driving after PMS if they feel well and have no other medical restrictions. Follow any individualized instructions provided by your clinical team.
What can I do if I experience soreness or discomfort after treatment?
If you experience mild soreness or discomfort, contact our office for guidance on appropriate ways to manage your symptoms. Your provider may recommend suitable comfort measures based on your medical history. If you experience severe, persistent, or worsening pain or any unusual symptoms, contact your provider promptly.
What are my activity restrictions after treatment?
PMS does not involve an implanted device or surgical incision, so the bending, lifting, and twisting restrictions associated with implant procedures generally do not apply.
Your activity recommendations will depend on your underlying condition and overall treatment plan. Follow any instructions provided by your treating provider.
When can I shower?
Because PMS is non-invasive and does not ordinarily involve an incision or dressing, there is generally no procedure-related waiting period before showering. Follow any separate instructions provided for other treatments or medical conditions.
When do I come back for a follow-up visit?
Your follow-up schedule will depend on your treatment plan, symptoms, and response to PMS. Our clinical team will advise you about any additional sessions and follow-up appointments recommended by your provider.
